Your Osteopathic Treatment

  • Your first appointment with an osteopath is similar to visiting a doctor. We’ll ask about the nature, location, and timing of your symptoms, as well as any previous treatments or medical history (including illnesses, accidents, surgeries, and medications). You may find it helpful to bring a summary of your symptoms, past treatments, or any reports such as X-rays or scans.

After discussing your history, your osteopath will explain your condition and treatment options, unless further tests are needed.

    • Full diagnostic assessment

    • Medical case history and health goals

    • Physical examination (e.g., reflexes, blood pressure, structural analysis)

    • Tailored osteopathic treatment

  • For your first visit, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing. Generally it is best if those identifying as male wear comfortable underpants or boxer shorts and females a bra and pants.

If your condition is very painful making it is difficult to bend it may be advisable to wear slip-on shoes and easily removable garments. If you prefer not to undress to your underwear, just let us know.

Teenagers and those who feel anxious may prefer to bring a light pair of shorts and/or T shirt to change into.  It is worth considering that denim jeans have hard seams and can be rather tight, making movements of the legs difficult.

For ongoing treatments, you may not need to undress fully. Soft, flexible clothes like leggings, shorts, or a tracksuit are ideal.

For babies and children, please dress them in easily removable garments to ensure comfort during treatment.

  • After treatment, avoid strenuous activities (e.g., heavy lifting, exercise, or housework) for at least two days. Don’t try to "work the pain off." If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to contact your osteopath.

    • Progress check

    • Ongoing hands-on treatment

    • Maintenance advice and further support to reach health goals

Osteopathy for Parents & Babies

Treatment for Mothers

Scar Therapy

After giving birth, mothers often experience discomfort related to scar tissue. C-sections in particular can restrict movement and cause lingering pain, tension & even trauma.

Osteopathic techniques, such as myofascial release , soft tissue manipulation and topical treatments, can help break down adhesions, improve blood flow, and promote healing in the affected area. This supports the body’s natural recovery and alleviates long-term discomfort or restricted movement caused by scarring.

Adjustments

Osteopathic adjustments also address the underlying musculoskeletal imbalances that can result from pregnancy and labor, such as back pain, pelvic misalignment, and postural strain. Correcting spinal alignment, restores movement patterns, and helps to regain mobility.

Emotional & Physical Support

The physical demands of pregnancy and labor often leave mothers feeling physically strained and emotionally depleted. Treatment helps in promoting relaxation, improving circulation, and supporting the nervous system, as a result mothers often feel more balanced, restored & relaxed.

Osteopathy for Babies

Tongue Tied Babies

Tongue tie (ankyloglossia), is a condition where the frenulum (the band of tissue under the tongue) is too tight, making it difficult for the baby to latch onto the breast.

Gentle cranial osteopathy can help release tension in the jaw and neck, improve tongue mobility, and supporting proper feeding. This can make breastfeeding easier and more comfortable for both the mother and baby.

Colic & Digestive Issues

Babies suffering from colic or digestive discomfort may experience prolonged crying, wind, or difficulty feeding. Treatments, such as cranial and visceral osteopathy, can help reduce tension in the digestive system, improve circulation, and free any blockages causing discomfort. Gentle abdominal massage and cranial adjustments can help relax your baby, ease trapped wind, and promote healthy digestion.

Difficulty Feeding

Feeding issues such as difficulty with latching or sucking, are often related to physical tension in the neck, jaw, or cranial bones. By applying gentle osteopathic techniques, such as cranial and myofascial release, restrictions in the head, jaw, and neck can be eased. This can help your baby latch, improving feeding and reducing any discomfort.

Improved Sleep and Comfort

Babies with structural imbalances may struggle with sleep or exhibit signs of discomfort, such as stiff necks or poor head control. Our techniques help relieve these tensions, promoting better sleep patterns, improving comfort, and allowing babies to move more freely, contributing to overall well-being.

Treatments

Your first appointment?

Please allow 30-40 minutes for the initial consultation. You'll be asked to complete a questionnaire before the visit which will be sent to you upon booking.

We advise that babies are not fed immediately before an appointment, however, it is important they are not overly hungry on arrival. You are welcome to feed during an appointment.

Preparation for bringing Newborn Babies

To ensure a relaxed assessment, it's helpful if your baby is calm and still. Feel free to bring a favorite book or toy from home, although we have some available as well. Dress your baby in easily removable clothes to keep them comfortable.

Treatment approach?

Osteopathic treatment for babies is gentle and hands-on, using techniques like cranial osteopathy, soft limb movements, and light massage. You will always be informed about the treatment and findings, with your consent taken before any treatment begins. You're encouraged to ask questions and stay involved in your child's care.
